Class Policies

Barry Goldwater High School Physical Education Department

Daily Routine:

Students will be on time and with their instructor at the designated roll call area as the final bell for class sounds. After roll call and any announcements students will have 7 minutes to dress for class in activity clothing. Class will consist of warm- ups/exercises, instruction, skill practice, competition/workout or evaluation. Classes will be excused to the locker room 7 minutes before the bell rings to dress back into their regular school clothes. All students must remain in the waiting area under the supervision of the coaching staff until the bell rings. Failure to do so will result in possible disciplinary action.

Locks, Lockers, Towels and Dressing Out:

Students are assigned a lock and a small locker which is to be used for storage of P.E. clothes and shoes. The locker and lock should not be shared with anyone else; it is for your use this semester only. The lock is the property of the school and must be returned in good working condition at the end of the course. If the student loses the lock at any time during the year, they must immediately purchase another one at the bookstore for $5. All personal locks will be cut off as school staff must have access to student lockers at all times.

During class, students will place their street clothes in the corresponding long locker. Students need to make sure to return their gym clothes to their small locker after class. Clean towels are issued after activities for showers only, and only at the students request. No towels, wet or dry, should be stored in your locker. Put used towels in the towel basket when finished drying with them so that they may be washed.

Lockers should be locked at all times and personal items locked in the lockers, not left out as a temptation for another student to steal. Problems most often occur when: 1) students share lockers; 2) personal items are left out of lockers; 3) lockers are left unlocked: or 4) expensive items such as jewelry or large sums of money are brought to the locker room and not secured.

Workout Uniforms:

You must change your clothes to receive credit for the day. The uniform of the day is the BGHS PE uniform or black athletic shorts (gym shorts) that fit properly, and a plain sleeved gray T-shirt with no alterations or tears. There are no exceptions to this rule. Students may not wear shorts that do not fit properly or allow underclothing to show (sagging) during class time. This rule applies even though the student≠s t-shirt covers their shorts. (Translation: students must have their shorts at their waist when participating in activity classes.)

The school "tardy policy requires that students be in roll call line as the final bell sounds. Students will receive seven minutes to dress and be at the designated meeting area to begin class. Failure to follow these important rules will eventually cause a loss of credit.

For safety reasons, we recommend that you do not wear any jewelry during class. Instructors will ask you to remove jewelry if it causes a safety issue to the class. Gym shoes, defined as shoes with athletic intent, not fashion, must be worn at all times during class. The school/district dress code also applies in determining dress that is not acceptable for activity.

Coaches make every effort to accommodate students with uniform problems but may issue a non-dress date if the student abuses the policy.

Dress-Out - Credit

The definition of dressing out is being on time, changing into an activity uniform, and remaining active throughout the period. Students wasting time or engaging in horseplay will not receive full credit for the period, if any. Generally speaking, six days of ≥not dressing≈ will fail a student for the quarter; however, it is mathematically possible to fail the class with just four dates. Make sure you dress daily to insure a passing grade.

Those that do not dress for class must be seated in the class waiting area and must have work to do. If you stand up during this time, you will be asked to sit down. On the second time, you will receive a referral and be sent to the office. You may not get up to get water or go to the restrooms without permission. If you leave the area, and I can not see you, you will receive a referral for ditching the class no matter where you went. If you are asked to be seated, you have loss all credit for the day.

Absences

In the course of the semester it is assumed students may have absences due to sickness or personal matters. Students missing more than ten class periods may lose credit in the class per the student handbook. Students must turn in make up work for days they are absent up to ten dates of no activity. On the 11th non-consecutive absence in the semester, make up work will not be accepted and non-dress dates will be assigned unless it is determined to be an "Extended Absence."

Make-Up

If you are absent for any reason, you must use the PE make-up activities form to maintain your grade: Obtain this form in the coach≠s office and complete it within one week. School activity related trips such as football games or band days do not have to be made up. Students may make up 10 consecutive medical pass days but are considered ≥long term medical≈ on the 11th consecutive date (see Extended Absences). Non-dress days cannot be made-up.

Extended Absences and Long Term Medical

In cases of long term medical excuses the Physical Education Department and Administration will individually consider each situation to determine if the student should 1) remain in the regular class and earn make-up credits, 2) re-enroll in class at a future date, 3) transfer to limited Physical Education class or 4) in extreme cases have the Physical Education requirement waived. Generally speaking, if a student has no chance of returning to activity they will be considered for a transfer to another class if possible. Students will begin to accumulate non-dress dates on the 11th consecutive date of no activity.

Nurse's Excuses

All doctor and parent excuses must be presented to the school nurse before physical education class. You are to report to the nurse before school or during lunch; not during class time. If you fail to see the nurse, you will receive a non-dress day until you bring in the pass. The date will become permanent after one week.

Injuries

For your safety, report all injuries to your coach immediately.

Student Conduct - Discipline

Physical Education classes inherently contain problems for students that can not remain on task. Remember that this class requires you to have a goal of working out once a day. This serves as your notice that the following actions are inappropriate and will not be tolerated. Further, you will not earn credit if you intentionally do them.

At no time are glass containers, food, or drinks allowed in the gymnasium, including PowerAid from the vending machines in the locker room.

You will be asked to remove them and then will fail to earn credit after that.

Enter the coaches' office only after being requested to do so. Do not touch any equipment anywhere unless you are given permission.

Profanity is never an option to get your point across. You will be removed from activity for the day and referred to administration for serious cases. School policy applies to the use of all tobacco products, alcohol, and drugs. This is a discipline referral.
